Description

Herbertville is a small settlement on the eastern coast of the North Island, in the Tararua/Manawatu District, 143km south of Napier. The township was formerly known as Wainui, after the river running through the settlement, but was subsequently re-named Hebertville in honour of Joseph and Sarah Herbert, early settlers (1854) who gave the land for the local school, post office and cemetery. Wainui cemetery is a public cemetery on the hill high above the beach on the right hand side of the road less than 1km from the Fire Station. It is accessed through private property and is a steep climb. The cemetery is very overgrown and hides the partly buried wooden palings and surrounds. Only 8 headstones remain. Information recorded here is taken from research done by Nola Hales, of Wimbledon, Dannevirke and headstones transcribed by Jeanette Miller and family. A memorial containing the names of those known to be buried here has been erected alongside the road down from the cemetery.
